Fuels Reduction/Wildfire Defensible Space
Wildfire is a natural part of the Western landscape, and although there’s no silver bullet for complete mitigation, there are actions that can be taken to lower the probability and severity of property damage. Fuels Reduction projects help to create defensible space around homes, and prepare adjacent forest land to slow the spread and lower the intensity of an approaching fire. Evidence from past fire seasons across the country indicate that properties managed for proper defensible space, are not only more likely to avoid severe damage, but are also more likely to be targeted by firefighters for structure protection operations. Properties with little or no investment in Fuels Reduction and Defensible Space are often deemed not worth protecting, with resources being most effectively used elsewhere.
